So if we ever face the problem of low water pressure, we should increase the water pressure and we can do that by following the steps stated in the rest of the article. We can do the work by ourselves if we follow the steps and as a result we can also save our money by not going to the professionals.

Before going to increase the water pressure, at first you should find out the current pressure of water in the house and you can do that by a water-pressure gauge. After buying it, you should screw it to a hose bib, like the one on an outdoor faucet. Whenever you open the bib’s valve the gauge should read between 40 and 60 Psi.

Check out this video about how to measure water pressure.

If you see that the pressure is in that range that means something is restricting the flow to your shower.

Firstly, you need to check whether the shower head is clogged or not. After that, you need to remove it and measure the water flow of the showerhead. You can do that by keeping the showerhead on and flowing the water into a bucket for 10 seconds. If you see that you have collected between 1⅓ and 1⅔ gallons which is equivalent to 8 to 10 gallons per minute then it is clear that the head is the culprit. In case, the flow is less then you should clean and replace the shower valve.

Now, If you find out that the entire house has low water pressure through gauge then you should try to adjust the pressure-reducing valve. In order to do that, firstly look at the main supply pipe near your water meter for a conical valve that has a bolt sticking out of the cone.

After that, you will have to raise the water pressure by turning the bolt clockwise after loosening its locknut. When you are loosening the lockout, you should keep an eye on the gauge to make sure the pressure is within bounds and then re-tighten the locknut. If you already have the necessary tools in your tool chest, then you are very lucky to do the work by yourself.

If you see that after doing all these adjustments your water pressure is not increasing then the municipal pressure itself may be inadequate. So you should start talking to your neighbors and checkout. If you see that their pressure is good then you should call the water company to check the shutoff valve out by the street.

And if their pressure is low like yours then you have only one thing left to do which is installing a water pressure tank. This will surely work in your favor and will increase the water pressure in your house.
